WIDESPREAD VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY
According to the The National Health and Nutrition Exam Survey (2000–2004) approximately 75% of adults in the US are vitamin D deficient. In support of its worldwide prevalence, a 2018 study examining the data of 35,667 individuals in Turkey found that over 94% had a serum level less than 30 ng/mL (insufficient), 76% had a level less than 20 ng/mL (deficient), and over 32% had a level less than 10 ng/mL (severely deficient). The average serum 25(OH)D level of all individuals in the study was 15 ng/mL, which is indicative of a severe deficiency.

Derived from cholesterol – vitamin D is technically a hormone – and is best described as a “super vitamin”, which regulates thousands of genes and metabolic processes in the body. In addition to its powerful anti-microbial and anti-viral activity, vitamin D is needed for the optimal production of the body’s master antioxidant glutathione, which regenerates other antioxidants, is anti-inflammatory, and serves a number of vital protective functions in the body.

In another study, the same year, titled, Vitamin D Deficiency and Acute Lung Injury, the authors state, “The evidence for the role of vitamin D in lung disease is growing – deficiency has been associated with impaired pulmonary function, increased incidence of viral and bacterial infections and inflammatory disease including asthma and COPD. Studies have also reported a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the critically ill and an association with adverse outcomes.”

So, what does that mean exactly?
TO DERIVE THE MAXIMUM BENEFIT FROM VITAMIN D – for most people – this means taking 5,000 iu of vitamin D3 per day as a maintenance dose, and to get your vitamin D level tested every 6 months, so that you stay within the optimal window of 50-90 ng/mL. If you’re overweight (or obese), you’re going to need 2-3 times this amount because fat stores sequester vitamin D, which reduces your blood level.
FOR A POWERFUL BOOST TO YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM, and as a potent anti-inflammatory nutrient (hormone) – you can safely take much higher levels of vitamin D3 in the short-term, for a few days until you’re feeling better. If you feel something coming on, immediately take the following: 1,000 iu of vitamin D3 per pound of body weight, which will give your immune system a powerful boost, and provide you extra support against bacterial and viral infections, as well as speeding your recovery. Make sure to take this higher dose with at least 200 mcg of vitamin K2 (Mk-7), which vitamin D needs to function properly.
